Dimmu Borgir

History

Photobucket

Dimmu Borgir is a symphonic black metal band from Norway. “Dimmu Borgir” means “Dark Cities” or “Dark Fortresses” in Icelandic and Old Norse. The name is derived from a volcanic formation in Iceland, Dimmuborgir.
Dimmu Borgir started as a melodic black metal band in 1993. Formed by Shagrath, Silenoz, and Tjodalv, the band released an EP in 1994 entitled Inn i evighetens mørke (“Into the Darkness of Eternity” in English). This short EP sold out within weeks, and the band followed up with the 1994 full length album For all tid. This album featured musical contributions by members of Dødheimsgard and Ved Buens Ende. The initial lineup consisted of Shagrath playing guitar with Tjodalv on drums and Silenoz backing vocals, however this changed before the release of Stormblåst (translates to “Storm Blown”) on Cacophonous Records in 1996. Stormblåst received high praise from many melodic black metal fans, and is often regarded as a highlight of the band’s career. It is also the last album which features all lyrics written and sung in Norwegian.

celtic frost

History

Celtic Frost was an influential extreme metal / avant-garde band from Zürich, Switzerland. They are known for their heavy influence on the extreme metal and gothic metal genres. The group was first active from 1984 to 1993, and re-formed in 2001. Following Tom Gabriel Fischer’s departure in 2008, Celtic Frost decided to break up again.

Celtic Frost’s former frontman, guitarist and singer Tom Gabriel Fischer, adopted the alias Tom Warrior. With Steve Warrior on bass, he formed one of the earliest extreme metal bands, Hellhammer, in 1982. Steve Warrior was later replaced by Martin Eric Ain - also a pseudonym. The band attracted a small international fan-base, got signed to Noise Records in Germany and recorded their debut EP Apocalyptic Raids in March 1984, now a rare finding on e-Bay or second hand record stores around the world.

By May 1984, Hellhammer had disbanded. Fischer and Ain, along with session drummer Stephen Priestly, regrouped as Celtic Frost. Their 1984 debut LP, Morbid Tales was a hit on the underground metal scene, and the band set out on its first tour, through Germany and Austria. This was followed with an EP “Emperor’s Return”. Both early releases are now available on one CD. One of their more influential recordings was 1985’s To Mega Therion, followed in 1987 by Into the Pandemonium. These albums were some of the pivotal LPs for underground metal and inducted a new and more varied sound.

History
Cradle of Filth is an extreme metal band, formed in Suffolk, United Kingdom in 1991. The band consists of Dani Filth (vocals), Paul Allender (guitars), Charles Hedger (guitars), Dave Pybus (bass), Sarah Jezebel Deva (backing vocals), Rosie Smith (keyboards), and Martin Skaroupka (drums).

In 1994, Cradle of Filth was signed to Cacophonous Records, on which they released their first album “The Principle of Evil Made Flesh”. Cacophonous also pressed the “Vempire or Dark Faerytales In Phallustein” EP in 1996. After this the band were signed to Music For Nations, for whom they produced three of their most prominent full length CD’s to date: “Dusk and Her Embrace”, “Cruelty and the Beast”, and “Midian”. The “From the Cradle to Enslave” EP and a compilation dubbed “Bitter Suites to Succubi” also featured many original songs, as well as some covers and re-recordings of old songs. Then in 2003, they signed to Sony and released only one album on this record label, “Damnation and a Day”. At the beginning of 2004 however, they left Sony and signed to Roadrunner records, through which they released the albums “Nymphetamine” (2004) and their latest “Thornography” (2006). They also have their own label Abracadaver on which “Bitter Suites to Succubi” was released. They hope to sign bands to this label in the near future. On Sept 27th 2008 Roadrunner Records and Cradle of Filth made available an MP3 download for “Tragic Kingdom” the first sample of the upcoming album “Godspeed on the Devil’s Thunder” due to be released in October (available here)
