deep purple

Photobucket

“Deep Purple” is an English hard rock band formed in Hertfordshire in 1968. Together with Led Zeppelin, Eric Burdon and Black Sabbath they are considered to be heavy metal pioneers. Especially influential to heavy metal were Ian Gillan’s powerful screams and Ritchie Blackmore’s virtuouso solos. Deep Purple were also very influential to progressive rock.

Deep Purple’s early output ranged from rock (such as their cover of Joe South’s “PlayHush”) to strongly classically influenced pieces (such as “PlayApril”, from their third album). Their first few albums contained very long solos, such as those on the band’s covers of “PlayHey Joe” and “PlayI’m So Glad.”

Van Halen

Van Halen is an international hard rock band formed in the early-1970s, originally called Mammoth (before being called Van Halen, one of the band’s ideas for a name was Rat Salade). The band’s first studio album, “Van Halen”, released in 1978 is widely regarded as a milestone in rock music. With this first release, the band, featuring David Lee Roth on vocals, Michael Anthony on bass, and Dutch-born Edward Van Halen on guitars (and also keyboards later) and brother Alex Van Halen on drums, established itself as a leader in the emerging and commercially successful U. S. heavy metal music genre of the 1980s. In particular, Eddie Van Halen quickly gained widespread notoriety for his technical prowess and musical sensibility. Almost overnight, he was touted as one of the most innovative and influential American rock and roll guitarists.

history

Judas Priest are pioneers of the heavy metal genre and were forerunners of the ‘New Wave of British Heavy Metal’ movement, laying the groundwork for the speed and thrash metal of the 80s and 90s.

The band was formed in Birmingham, England in 1969 by guitarist John Perry (who died shortly after and was replaced by Earnest Chataway), bassist Bruno Stapenhill, drummer John Partridge, and singer Alan Atkins.

In 1970, guitarist Kenneth Downing and bassist Ian Hill join, and in 1972 Rob Halford and drummer John Hinch join too. A second guitarist, Glenn Tipton, was also added to the lineup in 1974 as compensation for their record company’s (Gull Records) suggestion to add another instrument to the first album.

Atkins was replaced by singer Rob Halford and the band would go on to record 14 albums from 1974 through 1990. Their second album Sad Wings of Destiny is considered as one of the most influential album for metal, along with Black Sabbath’s self-titled debut album.

Their “twin axe attack” was not particularly popular at the time, but became a trademark for the group and would inspire other bands to do the same.

Halford left the group in 1993, going in a new direction with his new, short-lived metal band, Fight.

With Halford gone, the future looked bleak for the band, but after numerous searches for a suitable replacement, they found something special in tribute band front man Tim “Ripper” Owens.
