Ensiferum

History
Photobucket

Helsinki, Finland (1995 – present)
Ensiferum is a Viking / Folk Metal band from Helsinki, Finland.
Story of Ensiferum
1995Markus Toivonen played guitar with some friends in a band called ”Dark Reflections” which played mainly covers of certain heavy metal bands including Megadeth, Pantera and many others. Later on Markus felt that the band in which he was playing offered him very little inspiration and wanted to play something different. Markus was hugely inspired by folk music and also found himself fascinated about melodic death metal bands, like Amorphis and Dark Tranquillity. Then one day Markus asked the band’s drummer, Kimmo Miettinen, if he wanted to play heroic folk ’death’ metal with him. Kimmo agreed. Next Markus and Kimmo asked their friend Sauli Savolainen, if he wanted to come and play the bass. Fortunately he said yes. Now they had a band. Only trouble was that the band had no name at the time. One day Markus was visiting Sauli at his home, when he found a book. A Latin Dictionary. Markus casually opened the book. And from the first randomly picked page he glanced at a word. Ensiferum. Markus found the word fascinating and when he read the translation he got really excited of this word when it meant “sword-bearing”.

Arch enemy

History

Photobucket

Halmstad, Sweden (1995 – present)
Arch Enemy is a melodic death metal band from Halmstad, Sweden, and formed in 1995.
Arch Enemy is the brainchild of Michael Amott (Carcass, Carnage and Spiritual Beggars). Guitarists Michael Amott and younger brother Christopher Amott were joined by vocalist Johan Liiva (ex-Carnage, NonExist) and then-session drummer Daniel Erlandsson (Armageddon, Eucharist) in what Michael Amott called “An attempt to merge melody with aggression and technicality.”
The band’s debut, entitled Black Earth, was released by the now defunct Wrong Again Records in 1996. It obtained a fair amount of success in Japan, achieving MTV rotation with their first single “PlayBury Me an Angel”, as well as moderate success in Sweden. More of a ‘solo effort’ than a full band at this point, Michael Amott wrote all the songs himself, and even played bass guitar on the album - contrary to the album’s liner notes, which listed vocalist Johan Liiva as handling bass duties. Michael Amott later revealed that he had the credits listed that way to make the album seem more of a “band” effort. Many consider it to be the band’s most aggressive album, a trait which was softened to some degree on their following releases, but which was never abandoned.

Amon Amarth

History

Photobucket
Deeply rooted in melodic death metal with lyrics centred around Viking history and Norse mythology, Amon Amarth (formerly known as Scum) formed in 1992 in Tumba, Sweden, a southern suburb of Stockholm. They began writing material with lots of melodies, harmonies and lyrics about Vikings and the norse Pantheon. In summer 1993 they entered Lagret Studio to record the Thor Arise demo, which would later on appear on the bonus disc of the album Versus the World. The band continued rehearsing and writing stronger material and again entered the studio. The result was the second demo, The Arrival of the Fimbul Winter. This time the band was much more satisfied with the sound and songs and launched it to an unsuspecting underground. The response was overwhelming, quickly selling out of the first pressing and secured them a one off deal with Singapore’s Pulverised Records.

Unearth

Photobucket

Biography

Unearth member is:
Trevor Phipps - Vocals
Buz McGrath - Guitar
John Maggard - Bass
Ken Susi - Guitar
Derek Kerswill- Drums

Hailing from Massachusetts, Unearth bring a refreshing sense of talent with charismatic riffs, thought provoking lyrics and pummeling breakdowns. Unearth masterfully combine an intoxicating mix of American and European metal with hardcore ethic and punch. This unique approach makes Unearth one of the most abrasive, commanding and emotionally charged groups in heavy music today.
Formed in 1998, Unearth has accomplished more on their own than most bands can do with full support of a label and press. Constant tours all over the globe have earned them respect and recognition from their peers and helped cultivate one of the strongest fan bases around. In the last two years alone, Unearth has embarked on a sold-out headlining tour with Terror, Black Dahlia Murder and Remembering Never in tow, a sold-out run alongside Atreyu, and high profile treks with Slipknot, Killswitch Engage, Sounds Of The Underground 2005, The Headbanger’s Ball tour and Ozzfest 2004. This summer, Unearth will head back overseas as a featured act on Sounds Of The Underground Europe and will once again tear up the US on the now infamous Ozzfest before unleashing their brutal new album in August.

The highly anticipated release “III: In The Eyes Of Fire” was produced by the legendary Terry Date (Soundgarden, Pantera, Deftones) and should satisfy even their most hardcore of fans. While most bands these days seem to have replaced breakdowns with “pretty” choruses, Unearth have gone in the opposite direction delivering their most brutal album to date. This crushing follow up to 2004’s “The Oncoming Storm”, is sure to cause nothing less than total destruction to every mosh pit in its wake.

2) Unearth was a brutal death metal band from Albuquerque, New Mexico. They released 2 demos, Malformed Cranium in 1994 and Spill the Plagues in 1995.

shadow fall

Photobucket

History
Shadows Fall formed in 1996 in Springfield, Massachusetts and rose up as a prominent member of the bustling Massachusetts metal and hardcore scene that has recently produced bands such as Killswitch Engage, All That Remains, and Unearth. Guitar duo Jonathan Donais and Matt Bachand got together in ‘96 and had the original lineup complete within a year. These members were vocalist Philip Labonte, now with All That Remains, bass player Paul Romanko, and drummer David Germain.
History

Music from Shadows Fall’s early days can be compared to metal legends such as Metallica, Slayer, and Iron Maiden as their songs relied heavily on the start-stop tempo changes made famous by the aforementioned bands. The band also had alot of death metal influences at the time. They began touring the New England area and eventually were able to obtain open slots for acclaimed metal bands such as Fear Factory and Cannibal Corpse. In 1997, the band released it’s first full length album, Somber Eyes to the Sky, on Matt Bachand’s own Lifeless Records. This however, would be the only album the band would record with Labonte. He was replaced by current vocalist Brian Fair in 1998.

The band signed with the prominent underground metal record label, Century Media in 1999. Early during the following year, Shadows Fall released Of One Blood. Their sound was a still mixture of thrash, death metal, and hardcore with a little more hard rock influence thrown in due to the entry of the Brian Fair.

History
DevilDriver is a metal band from California, United States. The group was started by Dez Fafara, formerly of the band Coal Chamber, as a result of frustrations stemming from the more mainstream direction his former band mates were attempting to take their music. After the demise of Coal Chamber, DevilDriver became his main focus. Their debut album, the self-titled “DevilDriver”, was released on October 23, 2003 under Roadrunner Records.

Their second album, “The Fury of Our Maker’s Hand”, was released in 2005 and was generally well-received by fans and critics alike, even garnering a 4K review from renowned rock magazine Kerrang. The band went on numerous tours in support of the album, including stops in the USA, Europe, and Australia in support of Fear Factory, as well as the Burning Daylight Tour, their first headlining.

On October 31, 2006, DevilDriver re-released their 2005 album “The Fury of Our Makers Hand” with three additional studio tracks and three live recordings of previously released material. The special edition also contains a DVD of all of their music videos to date.

Children of boddom

Photobucket

History
Children of Bodom is a Finnish band from the city of Espoo, near Helsinki. The name of the band comes from one of the most famous Finnish murder cases of all time. (The murdering of three teenagers one night at Lake Bodom back in the 60’s.)

Early Children of Bodom albums are inspired by classical music and death metal (Red Light in My Eyes pt. 1 starts with a line from J.S. Bach’s Invention No.13 in A minor and Red Light in My Eyes pt. 2 includes selections from Mozart’s 25th Symphony), and later albums are more inspired by a commercial thrash and hair metal, losing some of its earlier melodic style. A precise definition for their musical genre is discussed by fans and the specialized press alike, often discounting the influences of the band and the composition of songs. The lyrics of their songs are written in the English language and are often of a simplistic nature, dealing with the subjects of death and personal struggles. As the band grows in experience, so does their playing style. They seem to change one way or another with every album that gets released. Even the album cover arts seems to change as the band grows. They are now also hitting the mainstream part of metal, their name and style being more known now. COB continues to inspire many musicians alike and more join the COBHC everyday.

The bandmembers include Alexi Laiho (lead guitar and vocals), Janne Warman (keyboard), Roope Latvala (rhythm guitar), Jaska Raatikainen (drums) and Henkka T. Blacksmith (bass guitar).

Ex-members are Alexander Kuoppala (rhythm guitar 1995-2003, Jani Pirisjoki - Keyboards (1995-1997), Samuli Miettinen - Bass (1993-1995) and Erna Siikavirta - Keyboards (1998 European Tour)
